ABOUT THE FILM
Co-directed by Matt Peterson and Malek Rasamny, Spaces of Exception investigates and juxtaposes the struggles, communities, and spaces of the Palestinian refugee camp and the American Indian reservation. The film features interviews with members of the American Indian Movement, the Mohawk Warrior Society, and several Diné families, all of whom are working to resist displacement on Black Mesa. It places these conversations alongside interviews with Palestinians living in refugee camps in the West Bank and Lebanon, focusing on the experiences of environmental activists, youth organizers, members of various Palestinian resistance groups, and families of political prisoners and martyrs. Space of Exception was shot over the course of three years in the West Bank, Lebanon, Arizona, New Mexico, New York, and South Dakota, and it makes connections between life in each place. The film considers the significance of the land ––its memory and divisions––and the necessary conditions for life, community, and sovereignty.

Aydın is a producer for The Fire These Times, an editor for Antidote Zine, and a co-founder and member of the From The Periphery media collective — a multi-media ecosystem focused on building internationalist dialogues and connecting struggles from across the world. This film screening emerged from an interview with the directors on The Fire These Times, bringing stories of Indigenous struggles on Turtle Island and Palestinian struggles in the Levant into dialogue as they mirror and contrast in their contexts and fights for sovereignty and liberation.
