The remarkable debut feature from Palestinian filmmaker Elia Suleiman, and the first installment in his celebrated trilogy. Winner of the Best First Feature prize at the 1996 Venice Film Festival, this quietly radical, darkly comic meditation on identity, displacement, and belonging announced the arrival of one of world cinema’s most singular voices. Nearly thirty years after its premiere, its questions of identity, memory, and the meaning of home remain as resonant as ever, and perhaps all the more affecting today.

DIVINE INTERVENTION
(2002, 92 mins, Palestine/France/Germany/Morocco, Arabic/Hebrew/English)

WHEN: December 17, 7:30pm – Divine Intervention
WHERE: Philosophical Research Society (3910 Los Feliz Blvd, Los Angeles)

Returning as his nearly silent alter ego E.S., Suleiman navigates a world of simmering tensions, petty indignities, and increasingly absurd encounters, moving between Nazareth and Jerusalem as he cares for his ailing father and pursues a romance with a Palestinian woman living in Ramallah. Separated by Israeli military checkpoints, the lovers’ clandestine meetings become acts of quiet defiance, their moments of intimacy unfolding against a landscape of surveillance, restriction, and seemingly insurmountable barriers. Through a succession of meticulously choreographed vignettes, Suleiman transforms the frustrations and tribulations of everyday existence into an astonishing series of visual gags, surreal confrontations, and flights of extravagant fantasy.

THE TIME THAT REMAINS (2009, 109 mins, France/Belgium/Italy/UK, Arabic/Hebrew/English)

WHEN: January 21, 7:30pm – The Time That Remains
WHERE: Philosophical Research Society (3910 Los Feliz Blvd, Los Angeles)

The ambitious, darkly humorous, and hauntingly affecting final installment in Palestinian filmmaker Elia Suleiman’s celebrated trilogy. Drawing upon his own family’s history, Suleiman creates a sweeping, visually inventive journey through six decades of Palestinian life, weaving together biting political satire, meticulously choreographed visual comedy, and moments of heartbreaking humanity in a poignant portrait of a people and a homeland transformed by history.
