Q: What dialect is taught?

A: Arabic classes are taught in a mixture of modern standard and touch on colloquial Levantine and Egyptian dialects.

Q: Where can I get the textbook?

We encourage you to reach out to your favorite indie bookstore to coordinate. In the Twin Cities, Magers & Quinn Bookstore often stocks the textbook; please call ahead for availability and allow one week for ordering, (612) 822-4611.

Q: I have no experience with the Arabic language—how do I know which level to sign up for?

If you have no experience with the Arabic language, we recommend starting from Beginning I. Beginning I pairs well with Conversation I for a well-rounded overview of reading, writing, sounds and pronunciation, and conversation. If you have specific questions, please be in touch with us at mizna@mizna.org.

Q: If I can read and write but can’t hold a conversation, what class should I sign up for?

We recommend signing up for Conversation I or II if you are familiar with the Arabic alphabet but need practice in spoken Arabic. If you have specific questions, please be in touch with us at mizna@mizna.org.

Q: What age range is allowed? Do you have children’s programming?

Unfortunately, we ask that students be 16 years old or above to enroll in classes at Mizna. We do not currently offer children’s programming, but can often make recommendations for places that do. Please email us at mizna@mizna.org and we will do our best to help!

Q: How many students are in each class?

Classes are currently taking place virtually in order to be safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. We cap our virtual classes at 9 students per class.
